You can dispose of Energizer® batteries with regular household trash—Energizer® was the first to remove all added mercury from alkaline batteries.

   

Who invented alkaline batteries?
Lew Urry, an Energizer® scientist, invented the first commercially viable alkaline battery more than 40 years ago. Today his handmade, prototype cell is on display at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History.
