| At Energizer® we take the responsibility for guarding the environment seriously. Each solution, even small ones, adds up to a significant contribution. So we continually review our products' contents and packaging to make changes that will make a difference. And we make sure our plants operate in compliance with government standards.
Products
Alkaline batteries
We've focused our environmental efforts on eliminating heavy metals in batteries, while at the same time improving performance. In 1989, we led the industry with the first alkaline ultra-low mercury battery. In 1991, we were able to make further improvements, introducing the first zero-added mercury battery in the United States.
Hearing aid
In 1995, Energizer discontinued selling mercuric oxide hearing aid batteries in the U.S. in favor of zinc air batteries. This change reduced the amount of mercury in hearing aid batteries by approximately 90 percent. Today we produce no mercury added hearing aid batteries.
Rechargeable
Energizer® Rechargeable™ batteries offer a good environmental choice for consumers—they're made with nickel metal hydride (NiMH) which is safer for the environment, and they can be recharged as many as 1,000 times. And since these batteries are high capacity, they work well in today's most demanding devices.
Packaging
We've adopted many changes in the area of package design. Our blister card packages, for instance, contain recycled paper-board material, and our ink coatings contain no heavy metals.
We've also eliminated ozone-depleting agents from our production process and work with our suppliers to do the same.
Manufacturing
In the manufacturing process, we implement water reduction and recycling whenever possible. Our goal is zero discharge of process wastewater. Wastewater discharges are in compliance with government standards.
Air emissions are routinely controlled, at a minimum, to the level of "best conventional technology" available at each plant.
Since 1973, Energizer has been aggressive in energy conservation and continues to develop domestic and international energy savings. We continue to conserve energy and improve energy efficiency of our internal operations and all the goods and services we sell. We continue to make every reasonable effort to use environmentally safe and sustainable energy sources.
How you can help
